Lisa’s desire to satisfy and empower residents and employees stems from the challenges she faced growing up.

“I had lived in 23 different homes by the time I went to college, and I never wanted to be in an insecure place from a housing perspective again. I oriented my entire life toward not only resolving that for myself, but finding a way to do that for others. Owning a business that helps people have the most empowering and dynamic living experience with a high degree of security, was something I felt could really be impactful and change the world.”

Lisa wanted a platform that would be accessible to maintenance staff where it matters most — in the field — as well as one that would give residents more flexibility in where and when they can communicate with property management. Her search for a software solution with easy to use, robust, and practical communication tools led her to AppFolio.

“AppFolio's always been mobile-friendly and cloud-based and that was a game changer for us. It's easier for our maintenance technicians. It streamlines things. Our residents are really appreciative that they can interface with their management company on the go, through their phone, or even at home through their desktop. It gives people a chance to take care of that part of their lives when it works for them, not just when it works for us.”

By helping streamline Flock DC’s operations, AppFolio created space for Lisa to focus on bigger and better things, literally, which has had a similar impact on her community.

“We had an opportunity to commission a mural from Rose Jaffe. And we knew early we wanted to feature Ruth Bader Ginsburg, a larger-than-life woman. An icon, not only in the nation's capital, but in our country and the world. Once we put the mural up, it became a gathering place. I love hearing how people are interfacing with it. My favorite story involves a resident’s four year old daughter. He told me that her room looks over the mural, and every morning she opens her window and she says, 'good morning, Ruth.’”
